INTERVIEW: The weird world of Winona

By Arianna Eisenberg and Brad Ritzer

"I've always had strong premonisions"She predicted a plane crash which could have killed off one of our top moviemakers, and has spooky dreams. Move over Mystic Meg, here’s Wacky Winona!

Winona Ryder remembered every detail of her disturbing dream when she woke up.

Her close friend, Jurassic Park star Lord Dickie Attenborough, had “died” when his plane crashed into a snowy mountain.

Anyone else would quickly have forgotten about it, but not Winona. She immediately called Lord Dickie’s office to warn him not to fly.

“They told me he’d been booked on a flight he’d had to reschedule.

Winona feels a mystic bond with Lord AttenboroughThat same flight crashed into a snow-covered mountain and I was both devastated and delighted - devastated that he could have been killed and that many did lose their lives, but delighted I had that connection to him on another level.

“It spooks me when I have those sorts of visions because they’re usually scary rather than happy.

But I’ve never had any about myself, luckily.”

Astrology, numerology, palmistry - you name it, Winona’s into it.

“I believe in it all,” she laughs. “I know I must sound like some dippy hippy type, but it definitely works for me.”

Winona, 29, was raised unconventionally, so it’s no surprise that she’s open to an alternative lifestyle.

Born Winona Laura Horowitz on October 29, 1971, her parents did not subscribe to any particular religion and were very spiritually-minded, according to friends.

Her spaced-out godfather, drugs guru Timothy LearyAnd her godfather was the infamous LSD guru, Timothy Leary.

Winona says she’s amazed by the accuracy of some of the psychic readings she’s had in the past.

“One psychic told me that I would fall in love with another actor who would win an Oscar,” she says.

“Years went by and I forgot all about it. Wow, was I shocked years later when I realized that her prediction had come true.”

Winona was at the time in her much-publicised relationship with Johnny Depp, and while he hasn’t won an Oscar, she went on to date Matt Damon, who did - for Good Will Hunting.

But she is wary of asking clairvoyants any more about her future.

“I would rather it surprise me,” she says. “I’ve always had strong premonitions, but to actually be able to see what’s going to happen?

I’m almost glad I don’t have that ability because I’m very sensitive and it might be too upsetting for me.

“But whatever the future holds, I’m ready to experience it!”

Having found inner peace, the actress recalls the nightmare of having previously suffered from years of insomnia and a string of romantic disasters.

But she adds: “I feel like all the bad stuff is behind me, and I’m very happy right now.”

With Buddhist chum Richard GereWinona is next on screen with Richard Gere in love story Autumn In New York.

She goes on: “Richard and I had hours of conversation about the universe while we were working together last year.

“He’s been a Buddhist for over 20 years and is such a wise man.

He’s aware of his good fortune and has a divine understanding of everything around him.”

In the film, she plays Charlotte, a woman struggling to come to terms with a severe heart ailment as well as a developing romance with Gere’s caddish restaurateur.

Winona admits: “I’m an incurable romantic. I always cry during movies when there’s a sentimental or sad or touching moment.

I’m a sucker for any love story, so when I had the chance to play in this film, I jumped at it.

“People ask why I’ve never played sexy roles. It’s because I’ve never felt very sexy.

I’ve never been aggressive when it comes to men and I never will be.

“I’m cautious before committing myself in a relationship because I know that once I fall in love, that’s it, I’m hooked.

I was born wanting to get married and have kids.”
