Sandler Ropes An Easy Ryder

By Hollywood.com Staff

Winona RyderHOLLYWOOD, Feb. 16, 2001 - Winona Ryder may be one of the best young actresses in Hollywood, garnering Oscar nominations and critical kudos, but sometimes you just can't say "no" to gut-busting laughs.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Adam Sandler will join Ryder in "Deeds," an update of Frank Capra's 1936 comedy "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town." In "Deeds," Sandler will play a kind-hearted yet naïve small-towner who inherits his uncle's billion dollar international business conglomerate then hightails it to New York City. Sandler's character's sunny worldview soon has a sunnier effect on the grumpy New Yorkers around him. Ryder is in negotiations to star as Babe, a reporter for a New York tabloid TV show, who goes undercover to get the dirt on Sandler, but ends up falling in love with the happy-go-lucky guy.

Ryder is coming off two bombs, "Lost Souls" and "Autumn in New York," and is looking for a hit, and despite Sandler's "Little Nicky" misfire, he is still considered to be box office gold. "Deeds," which will be directed by "Big Daddy's" Steven Brill, will begin filming at the end of March. Before "Deeds" rolls though, Sandler will complete a highly anticipated comedy directed by "Magnolia's" Paul Thomas Anderson.
